The Secret Life of Bees
05/14/10
The other day I finished reading The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. If you haven’t read this book, you need to. It really is that simple. It was absolutely wonderful. The only bad thing about it was that I ended up reading late into the night when I meant to sleeping!
The story follows Lilly Owens, a fourteen year old girl living in the summer of 1964. Running away from a cruel father, she and her black nanny Rosaleen end up living with three black women named May, June and August. This is a beautiful coming of age novel and an exploration of humanity and motherhood. I could not stop reading.
Highly, highly recommended.
