Cold in the Summer

For some unknown reason, the past three days I was freakishly exhausted and freezing cold (picture everyone else walking around in shorts, while I am in long pants with a long sleeve shirt and a sweater, sitting under a thick blanket with a heating pad on my back, drinking tea – still complaining about the cold. Seriously.).

While fibromyalgia often leaves me low on energy, rarely does this translate into feeling like I want to sleep. However in the past three days I have had two mid-afternoon naps! And not just cat-naps, the kind of deep sleep where you blackout before your head hits the pillow!

Luckily, even though I was really really tired, I wasn’t feeling unwell. So I’m not really sure what it was all about, but so far I seem to be doing a lot better today.

The one really frustrating thing about being so exhausted was that I had to cancel my plans for last night. I was supposed to hang out with some old friends that I hadn’t seen in a long time, but I was simply too exhausted to go!

Fibromyalgia often results in me having to cancel plans at the last minute, and this can be really upsetting at times. The fact is though, when I cancel plans, it is so that I can stay home and rest and take care of myself. I know that even if I did go, I wouldn’t have a good time, and likely no one would enjoy my tired and grouchy company! Sometimes though, even though I know I need to stay home, it can be upsetting to feel like I am missing out. Usually though, my friends are very understanding, and when I feel better I can reschedule.

So if you know someone with a chronic illness, don’t be angry or upset with them when they cancel plans at the last second – they are doing the best they can, and focusing on their health, which has to be their first priority (especially if they are ever going to get to a state where they can focus on anything else).

To all my Canadian readers, I hope you had a wonderful Canada Day yesterday! I was tucked in bed far away from fireworks (which scare the bejeezers out of me – they are too loud!!).
