Rest and Recovery

I just got back from another stint in Muskoka. It was a perfect weekend, which involved a lot of late night star gazing (there was even a meteor shower!). I expected that I would take a few days to recover from my awesome weekend. However, instead of a drawn out period of really feeling my fibromyalgia, I instead slept for a ridiculous amount of time. I went to bed at 11:30 last night, and my mom finally woke me up at 1:30 this afternoon!

If you’ll recall, earlier in the summer I had another sleepfest when I slept for almost two full days after my weeklong stint at Humber. So this is becoming something of a trend. What is fabulous about it is that it compresses my recovery time mostly into one period of supersleep! What this means, is that where before I may have had about four days of feeling unwell and not being able to do anything more than sit on the couch, now I just sleep solidly for a long night, and then take a lazy day or two just to be safe. This is a serious improvement.

I think that I can credit this change to all of the actions I have been taking this summer to improve my health. I never could have slept so soundly before taking up yoga and meditation so seriously, and with eating healthier, not only my sleep, but my whole life quality has improved. My parents have commented on how much faster I recover now, and honestly, everywhere I go people keep telling me how great I look :) People are noticing how healthy, happy and strong I feel.

What I have to be careful of now is not getting caught up in feeling great and start ignoring my body or pushing too hard. When in the throws of a period of better health, it is really important (and sometimes really hard!) to remember that I still have fibromyalgia. There are still a number of precautions I have to take, and I have to remember that while I may have had a ton of fun seeing all my friends the last couple of days, equally important is a few days of down time. So now I’m off to relax :)
